West River project

Summer workshop report, 2016

[Presentation slides in PDF]

Lulu Wang and Syrus Jin worked this summer on Professor Steven Miles’ research of commercial and mercantile networks in southern China, specifically within the West River basin, through an investigation of the network of donors listed on stone inscriptions throughout the region. The first aspect of the work was composed of transcribing the stone inscriptions into XML format which could then be displayed digitally on a future website summarizing Miles’ research, and developing a system of tags to format the nature of the stone inscriptions. The second aspect was composed of giving the stone inscriptions and the list of donors a geographic meaning by mapping out their locations using ArcGIS and drawing a visual connection composed of lines and nodes in order to create a rough image of merchant networks within the West River basin.
