Creating a Federal Government
Principal Investigator: Peter Kastor, Washington University in St. Louis
At a moment when Americans are debating the role and meaning of the federal workforce, this digital project provides the first-ever reconstruction of that workforce in its crucial first decades. Created by historian Peter Kastor in collaboration with the HDW, this project combines the career profiles of over 38,000 federal employees with a digital map of their locations and an extended discussion of the early federal system. Creating a Federal Government leverages digital history to provide an unprecedented view of how the Founding Fathers imagined the role of government.
